A couple of weeks ago, while browsing through the mystery section of NetGalley, we found CJ Lyons and her book 'The Next Widow'. It is one of the most unputdownable thrillers that we have come across in a while. We feel blessed to have CJ on our blog today to answer some of our questions.

New York Times and USA Today bestselling author of over forty novels, former pediatric ER doctor CJ Lyons has lived the life she writes about in her cutting edge Thrillers with Heart.

Two-time winner of the International Thriller Writers’ coveted Thriller Award, CJ has been called a "master within the genre" (Pittsburgh Magazine) and her work has been praised as "breathtakingly fast-paced" and "riveting" (Publishers Weekly) with "characters with beating hearts and three dimensions" (Newsday).

Q) First of all, congratulations! Where did you get the inspiration for ‘The Next Widow’?

CJ: The inspiration for The Next Widow came from what is any ER doctor’s worst nightmare: having absolutely no control over the fate of a loved one.

Q) This book deals with complex characters and many twists and turns, how did you keep all of these details together while planning?

CJ: After publishing 47 novels, I guess that’s just the way my mind works!

Q) Who was your favorite character to write? Who was the most difficult?

CJ: I really enjoyed writing Luka’s point of view because he combined a poet’s keen sense of observation with a police officer’s pragmatism, giving him that gut instinct v. logic or heart v. head tug of war that I think makes for a compelling character.

The most difficult to write was the anonymous killer—because he is in many ways also a victim, so I needed him to be sympathetic while also exposing the chaos devouring him.

Q) Do you try more to be original or to deliver readers what they want?

CJ: Both. I have to write the book I want to write, exploring the themes, cutting-edge medicine, or examining certain aspects of police work that interest me—otherwise I get bored and the book turns into a plodding mess. So I have my fun while writing the first draft, but the second draft is all about giving the reader a (hopefully!) remarkable and compelling experience.

Q) What are some books you’d recommend for fans of your work?

CJ: My award-winning Lucy Guardino Thrillers are fan favorites, so I’d start there with Book #1, SNAKE SKIN.

Q) Do you plan on returning to the world of ‘The Next Widow’ in the future, or do you have any other projects in mind? Can you tell us about them?

CJ: Jericho and Wright Thriller #2 is with my editor and will be released in November. We haven’t settled on a title yet, but it delves into more of Luka’s past and centers on the hunt for a serial killer who may not have actually killed anyone.

A gripping crime thriller with unputdownable suspense

In the distance Leah heard sirens. She ignored them. Right now, her daughter needed her and Emily was just out of reach, curled up under the bed, her eyes closed, desperately shaking. Leah did the only thing any mother would do. She crawled through the blood to get to her daughter.

Dr Leah Wright returned to her childhood home in rural Pennsylvania with her husband to find peace and quiet, start afresh and raise her six-year-old daughter Emily. But when she gets home one dark winter night, clutching roses in her hand, she finds her daughter huddled under her bed and her husband’s blood all over the floor...

When Detective Luka Jericho is called to investigate, he’s shocked to learn that the killer left a witness behind – the victim’s young daughter. The scene is a painful reminder of his fiancĂ©’s unsolved death, and he is desperate to find out what Emily saw that night. He knows that the killer could still be out there, waiting to strike again.

But growing up, Leah learned the hard way that the only person she could rely on was herself. And it’s not until she and Emily are attacked again that she realizes just how close the killer is. Can she trust Luka to keep her daughter safe?
